buuuullshit!
yesterday in my geography class we were talking about how there are a lot of forest fires in the rural areas of portugal. then he said that one of the main causes for these forest fires is that people in portugal like to go on picknicks a lot and the usually bring a bottle or two of wine, ya know. and they leave these bottles of wine there because they have "no sense of civic duty" and the sun rays hit these bottles and they concentrate the rays like how magnifying glasses do and this starts fires. i think the chances of this happening is extremely slim, certrainly too slim to be the first reason he lists for thousands of hectares ( i dont understand this form of measurement) of the country side of portugal going up in flames.

liv, your teacher is full of it.
"It's (forest fires in portugal) been brought about by absolutely exceptional weather conditions, so we have to respond with exceptional measures." - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3124745.stm
and
"A summer of drought has sparked fires across southern Europe, with Spain and France also fighting flames."
"Four people, including one former firefighter, were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of arson, police said. A total of 102 people have been held this year."
"We always had forest fires, but I don't know why they were easier to put out." (haha) - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4175922.stm
also
"While Portugal faces its worst drought in 60 years, more than 3,000 firefighters struggle to contain almost 20 fires ravaging the countryside. Water shortages and temperatures higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) have hampered fire control efforts.
